Jane, the Director, was called by the same volunteer childrenâs officer since a certain mother had abandoned her young baby. Going to the Childrenâs Office the Director found a very ill baby. His skin looked yellow and the baby was very weak. The reports reaching the office said that the mother was a prostitute. She used to leave the baby alone in the house the whole night. She would feed him on alcohol and sleeping pills.
When we got him he was four months old and this had happened to him since birth. Ian had bleeding ulcers. It took us many doctorsâ visits until we met with one Dr Karanja from Kenyatta National Hospital who was able to diagnose Ianâs problem. His stool used to be full of fresh blood. He was treated but has retained emotional scars. He is seeing a counselor on a very regular basis. He is a very bright boy, he goes to school he is ten years old.
